Zumba to the Mistletoe: Training to do a Half Marathon (Z-57 days and counting)

Hi my name is Gail, I’m soon to be 42 years old while writing this blog and the purpose of this blog is to let you know how amazing ZUMBA Fitness really is.  It literally has transformed my life and has touched my entire family, including my husband of 15years.  He does ZUMBA with me at least once a week and really enjoys it. I have three boys ages 6, 4, and 2 years old. They all love to do Zumbatomic (ZUMBA for kids)  or dance with me as I am practicing.

Just to tell you a little about myself, I’ve never been an athlete; however,  on my 40th birthday I tried ZUMBA for the first time in my home with the ZUMBA Fitness DVD.  I wasn’t sure if I liked it, and tried it again six months later at a recreation center with a ZUMBA instructor.  I loved it!  I tried it because for the first time ever, I was training for a 5K run and was bored with the treadmill and needed to shake it up.  I really noticed how happy I was while doing ZUMBA, how happy I was AFTER I did ZUMBA, and how much sweat I had during and after the class! It was a true workout. So,I decided to keep doing it and did complete my first 5K successfully.  Then, I decided to run a Half Marathon last year – the same year as the 5K but kept it simple.  I trained by doing ZUMBA.  The most important thing I want you to know is that I didn’t just do an hour of ZUMBA, I participated in multiple ZUMBATHONS that lasted either 2 or 3 hours.  I was convinced that if I could do ZUMBA for 2 or 3 hours, I could do a half marathon and train with only doing ZUMBA.  Last November, I participated in the Rock ‘N Roll Half Marathon in Savannah, GA and completed the time in 3 hours and 19 minutes.  I was elated!!!  Now I want to do again and realize I’m another year older and I need to pick up the pace with ZUMBA.

ZUMBA Gail knows what it’s like to balance being a full-time mom and a full-time job

Here is what I have going on:  As mentioned, I’m a wife and mother of 3 very active little boys as well as have a full time job where I travel 2-3 times out of the week every month.  I have  right at 90 employees who report to me.  I really enjoy what I do and am very Blessed to have career in sales.  The tricky part is finding the balance because I do love to work, spend time with my family but I also have to have that “me” time.  Fortunately, my husband wants nothing more than to see a smile on my face and that’s why he is so supportive of me doing ZUMBA and as mentioned he does ZUMBA with me at least once a week at our gym.

What’s my motivation for doing this blog?  It’s to show in REALITY that ZUMBA Fitness is awesome – for ANYONE!!  I know I said that already and I can’t say it enough.  If you have never tried it before, you should.  If you tried it but weren’t sure, try it again or try it with a different instructor.  If you stick wit this exercise program, it not only transforms your body but it also transforms your LIFE .

Now, back to the Mistletoe.  I have 57 days before I run this half marathon, the Mistletoe in Winston-Salem, NC with my co-worker. We ran the Rock ‘N Roll Half together last year and we have a great kinship.  She introduced me to running races and I introduced her to ZUMBA.  When I ran my first marathon, I weighed 175 pounds.  That was my lowest weight in 5 years after I had the babies back to back.  I had blossomed to over 220 pounds and every time I started losing weight, I was blessed with another pregnancy.Since my last child, I have reduced myself to 162 pounds and would like to lose more weight which will really help me with ZUMBA but also the race too.  My ultimate goal is to weigh in between 150-155 pounds.  I’m giving myself some wiggle room since I am  constantly traveling to meetings and then going to dinner at 7 or 8 pm with my boss and counterparts.

Here is what I did last week to really increase my cardio:

SAT 9/29 –  (1.5 hours ZUMBA) attended a ZUMBA Master Class on 9/29 with Melissa Carias from Honduras.  She’s a ZJ or ZUMBA Jammer and the class was open to the public for 1.5 hours.  It was one big ZUMBA party and I burned a minimum of 1,500 calories!!

SUN 9/30 – (3 hrs ZUMBA)   attended the Jam Session on the 30th for 3 hours of learning choreo.  It was intense and filled with lots of dancing.

MON -WEDS 10/1 – (NO ZUMBA) Monday I worked from home and got alot of things accomplished with my job, but really didn’t have any time to ZUMBA.

THUR 10/4 –  (1 hr ZUMBA) at the gym

THUR 10/4 – (Another 1 hr ZUMBA) at a different venue— PS  I got home around 10:30 pmand my husband had already bathed the boys and I was so very thankful.  The reason why I felt like I owed him big time was I really thought I was going to die last night.  It’s been over a year since I’ve done back to back ZUMBA classes and I was so tired and nauseous!  My husband wanted me to eat something.  Are you kidding me?  I’m trying to lose weight not stay the same and it was too late, so I got in a fetal position and before I knew it, it was 3:30 am.  I got up and believe it or not, I did ZUMBA the next morning after spending time at my computer for my job.

FRI 10/5 (1 hr ZUMBA) at Studio ZT  in the morning

FRI 10/5 (1 hr ZUMBA) at Fitness A to Z in Lexington

SAT 10/6 (1 hr ZUMBA) My husband and I will do one hour of ZUMBA tomorrow, Saturday morning at the RUSH.  Then, it will stop!

I will travel to Charlotte, NC for a 2 day meeting and will pick back up again on Wednesday, 10/10.  It will be very important for me to stay on track.  With Halloween and Thanksgiving coming up before the race I have got to stay focused.

I hope you will join me in this ZUMBA journey to complete a half marathon with ZUMBA training only.  My goal is to also incorporate some ZUMBA toning and Aqua ZUMBA to mix it up and work more muscle group.

TOTAL ZUMBA time for WEEK 1 =  9.5hrs

Thanks, signing off.
